A community that makes things in public
Yarn Bombing Singapore is a crochet collective. Since 2014 we have taken yarn outside, turning it into public art at scale. As far as we know, we are the only group in Singapore doing this work as a community, at this size.
Every project begins with a public space and a theme to bring to it. From there the work is made by many hands, from monthly-meetup regulars to people who join us for a single project, with a small core that carries the thread from year to year.
We set the theme; everyone is free to express it in their own piece, so long as it holds together with the rest. Each contributor's piece is their own. The whole is ours. That is the community installation model, and it has been our way of working for more than ten years.
We have worked across Fusionopolis One at one-north, Jurong Lake Gardens, Armenian Street, the Bukit Timah Truss Bridge, Pangsua Pond, and Maker Faire Singapore.
Where we've been
- 2014
Founded by a small group of local crochet enthusiasts. We debuted at the Singapore Mini Maker Faire.
- 2014-2019
At Maker Faire Singapore every year, growing the group one project at a time.
- 2016
Merlion's Magic Garden: a centrepiece roughly three metres by two, made of around 2,200 crocheted squares with LEDs worked in.
- 2018
A Coral Reef of crocheted corals and marine life, later shown at the Singapore Eco Film Fest at the ArtScience Museum.
- Since 2022
CNY Toppers at Fusionopolis One every Chinese New Year, and Our Yarny Trees at Jurong Lake Gardens each National Day, closing with the SG60 edition in 2025.
- 2023
Lean on Me: two installations for a community wellbeing initiative. Chill, Enjoy the Little Things at the Bukit Timah Truss Bridge drew on the patchwork blankets children get from their grandparents. A New Day at Pangsua Pond answered with butterflies, dragonflies and a bird of peace, a message of transformation.
- 2026
Yarn-menian on Armenian Street, made for Singapore Art Week.
